Preserving and Restoring

The Friends of Carrington is a 501(c)(3) community-led nonprofit organization dedicated to stewarding and advocating for the historic Carrington Estate, a National Park Service LGBTQ+ landmark on Fire Island.

We are committed to restoring the Carrington House and Cottage to honor its history and to provide a welcoming, diverse and inclusive center for arts and culture.

Vision

Under the ownership of Frank Carrington, his estate became an incubator of creativity that fostered collaboration between the gay and straight artistic communities.  Frank Carrington deeded the property to the Fire Island National Seashore in 1969, in the hope of preserving his legacy.

Our goals are to:

  • honor the 50-year-old promise to Frank Carrington to further the legacy of this mid-century artistic nexus and its unique natural setting.

  • provide a forum to highlight the layered LGBTQ+ history of the area.

  • thrive and grow as an innovative and compelling voice for the future of LGBTQ+ life.

  • provide direction and leadership that encourages visionary and inclusive artistic and cultural programs inspired by the unique Fire Island setting.

  • strengthen the links between the neighboring communities of Cherry Grove and Fire Island Pines.

  • promote preservation, park stewardship and environmental sustainability.

  • partner with the National Park Service on all of the above.
